The Curbside Chronicle is Oklahoma's street paper, offering a voice and employment to those experiencing homelessness. It empowers vendors with income, breaking employment barriers and fostering essential life skills. Street papers like Curbside help individuals secure housing, while also cultivating community and breaking down stereotypes, one magazine at a time.
Curbside frequently collaborates with local artists to illustrate articles. In th is issue, which centered around music, I had the opportunity to illustrate Roderick Crystals' perspective on Lizzo, particularly her song "Juice."
“Juice” is catchy. I’ve heard people compare Lizzo to Beyonce, but I feel like this song makes Lizzo her own thing. She’s an original and true to herself. It’s important not to be exactly what other people want you to be. Just be you. If nobody likes who you’re trying to be, that’s their problem. Express yourself. That’s old school. Lizzo’s style seems more down to earth. “Juice” is just different from what I’m used to hearing on the radio. I’m a DJ and this track just stands out. I’d play her five times a night if I could. I grew up listening to music. I remember running around in diapers and dancing to “Brick House” by The Commodores. My mom and my grandfather used to sing in a gospel group at church. My mother was also a DJ, so appreciating old music runs in the family” - Roderick Crystal, Curbside Vendor
